Aikido = Aikido is a modern martial art that developed from Japanese jujutsu. It is comprised of defensive techniques designed to redirect the energy of an attack. The correct execution of Aikido and jujutsu techniques does not require strength or speed, but relies on distance, timing, leverage, and most importantly, the flexibility to adapt to each situation while blending with and redirecting an attacker's energy.
Atemi = (lit. Striking the Body) Strike directed at the attacker for purposes of unbalancing or distraction. Atemi is often vital for bypassing or "short-circuiting" an attacker's natural responses to aikido techniques.
Bokken = bokuto = Wooden sword.
Dan = a rank of black belt in martial arts
Gi (do gi) (keiko gi) = Training costume.
Ki = energy
Kuzushi = A judo aspect that means unbalancing
Kyu = a term to describe grades below a black belt
Nage = the thrower or the one performing the technique
Uke = The person being thrown or receiving the technique.
